For dog owners and dog walkers
Your dog is welcome on Chailey Commons, but please keep dogs under close control so that they do not worry the cattle or ponies. Ponies are normally not interested in dogs but as free ranging undomesticated animals they can be unpredictable.
Under the open access regulations, your dog MUST be kept on a lead, a maximum of 2m long, during the bird nesting season and at any time around livestock. Please keep your dog out of the troughs as the water is drinking water for the livestock.
We do also ask that you please clean up after your dog as dog fouling can lead to an over enrichment of the soil, which in turn, can damage the sensitive heathland ecosystem by allowing in a less diverse and coarser assemblage of plants. There is a further issue regarding the parasite Neospora which can cause cattle to abort their calves while certain flea treatments can significantly affect the organisms in our aquatic ecosystems, particularly ponds.
So please do use the bins in the main car parks to dispose of dog waste at the end of your walk so that we can keep the heathland free from disease.
